Home owners interested in learning what siding costs, we advise to start budgeting using the Cost Versus Value Report. This report is put together by Remodeling Magazine, a third party company that collects data from the industry and publishes an annual report. We have included excerpts from this report on this page. To effectively use this tool, keep in mind the following:
- The siding project data represents the industry average cost per square foot from products installed by small companies in the smallest amounts to products installed by large companies in the largest amounts for the area designated.
- It’s important to note you must apply the cost per square foot to the amount on your own home to get the correct amount to start your budget at.
- In the example below, the average fiber cement siding project cost for Boulder Colorado, taken from the 2020 Cost vs. Value Report is $16,071 while the average project square footage is 1250 square feet. This means that in Boulder the average amount home owners are spending to renovate the body of the siding with fiber cement siding is about $13.36 per square foot which is $16,701 divided by 1250 square feet.
- Take the measurements of your exterior walls where ever there is cladding and multiply this by $13.36. If you live in Boulder and have 2000 square feet of siding, your rough budget should begin at around $26,720 without additional components like soffit, fascia or gutters. The figure does include trims around the windows and corners.
- The numbers at first glance can be mis leading, so be sure to start budgeting with this in mind. Because the statistics include partial replacements mixed in with full replacement projects, a full replacement will likely be more square footage on your home than the 1250 square foot amount the figure shows as an average amount.
- Also be sure to note that the square footage of your home's living space will not be equal to the amount of cladding on your home's exterior walls and gables. On average the home's exterior walls could be 2-4 times the square footage of the footprint of your home's internal living space. In other words if you live in a home with 2000 square feet of living space, you could have over 3000 square feet of external walls with siding on all sides of your exterior.
